National Gas Engine fires up, runs, and shuts down

A 94 horse power National gas engine from 1909 runs at the Cambridge Museum Of Technology. This is one of two engines of this type in the engine room. To quote the museums website : "Before the engines can be started they have to be in exactly the right position. The flywheel, which weighs 3.5 tons (3556kg), is rotated by engaging the geared handwheel into the cogs on the flywheel. This is turned until the crankshaft is 30 degrees (0.523 rad) after top dead centre. These engines by the way are so solid that I can balance an old two bob bit on its side whilst the whole thing is in use and it will remain upright throughout. Anyway the mixture of gas and air is then pumped by hand into the combustion chamber or cylinder which burns and expands, driving the piston to turn the flywheel. The inertia of the flywheel keeps the engine turning, more gas and air are drawn into the cylinder and the mixture is ignited automaticallly by the spark from the magneto." An Oscillating Single Cylinder Steam Engine

This engine at Crofton Pumping Station was made by Hornes of Dartford in Kent in about 1890. It was used to drive an exhaust pump at a gas works and has an 8 inch (200 mm) bore cylinder and a stroke of 18 inches (450 mm). In its original installation it developed about 10 hp (7.7 kW) at 120 rpm, but the actual power output is probably a bit lower, due to the low steam pressure for the beam engines. The use of an oscillating cylinder engine avoided the need for a knuckle joint and cross head in the connecting rod and thus permitted the overall height of the engine to be reduced. Oscillating cylinder engines were often used in the early days to power steamships and the SS Great Britain, now at rest in Bristol, was thus powered. Paddle steamers with oscillating two cylinder engines usually had the cylinders below the crankshaft, resulting in a low center of gravity and the optimal position for the paddlewheels, fixed on the crankshaft. What I liked at this engine, was the sophisticated valve gear, where the motion of the eccentric is transmitted to the oscillating steam chest in front of the cylinder, by the help of an elegantly moving three-bar-linkage. The James Simpson or Waddon beef pumping engine

Kew Bridge steam museums Waddon engine came from waddon pumping station and was the last reciprocating steam engine in comercial operation, decomissioned in 1983! It is now in preservation and runs very niceley although developed a squeak today! The Allen Diesel Pumping Engine at Kew Bridge Steam Museum

A short film showing the Allen Diesel pumping engine at Kew Bridge Steam Museum. This engine is one of four originally installed at the Kew Bridge pumping station in West London to supplement the steam pumping engines. It is still in it's original 'temporary' engine house and is started using compressed air which is generated by the original two-stage compressor.

Ryhope Engine Museum

The water pumping station at Ryhope (in Tyne and Wear) as built in the mid-19th century and served until 1967. It is now maintained by enthusiasts who run it on occasional "steam days". This footage was taken on 26 may 2008. For more details see www.ryhopeengines.org.uk

Starting the Waddon Steam Engine

This steam pumping engine, built in 1910 and doing 180hp, worked at Waddon pumping station, Croydon, Surrey. You can see its original working place in johnofbristol's youtube-video Last day at Waddon www.youtube.com . Now the engine is one of the highlights at Kew Bridge Steam Museum, London, see www.kbsm.org . The Bratch Pumping House Steam Engine

A Victorian water pumping station in the village of Wombourne, near Wolverhampton, England, pumps water from a 160 ft deep borehole to a covered reservoir on Goldthorn Hill, from whence it is gravity-fed to the town of Bilston. The pumps were originally powered by a pair of in-line steam-powered engines which fell into disuse. One of those engines, "Victoria", has been lovingly restored by Len Crane and friends. Twice a year, he and the Friends of the Bratch recreate what it was like in the days when the steam engine was working for a living. Steam is now provided by an oil-fired steam boiler, but the sounds, smells and atmosphere of this unique steam engine draw enthusiasts from miles around. This was the scene on 17 June 2007
