Contaminated Water in High Arctic

Unreported Jet Fuel Spill in Resolute Bay There has been a major spill of jet fuel at the airport in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. The spill occurred two weeks ago and the people responsible for it have not called Environment Canada or any other government agency. We were made aware of the spill last night by employees of the company who are covering up the spill. Up to 80000 litres have leaked from the plane filling station on to the ground. This spill can migrate to the pond at the airport which drains to Resolute Lake. There is much vegetation in this area as well as fish in the lake which would be impacted. Most of the contaminated snow from the airport (300 cubic metres) has been hauled to the dump on the shore of the Northwest Passage. This large pile of contaminated snow is only a few feet from the shoreline. The company is considering setting the pile of snow and jet fuel on fire to destroy the evidence. The contaminated material in the dump can run directly into the ocean where it will affect all the fish, the clams, the seals, the whales and the bears. It also poses a risk to the polar bears and arctic foxes feeding at the dump. The company responsible for the fuel at the airport hauled more contaminated snow from the airport yesterday. They removed contaminated snow from the area of the spill and replaced it with clean snow to hide the jet fuel on the ground.
