15 February 2007 - Team Dumb & Dumber continue on the Plymouth to Banjul old banger rally in their £300 Peugeot 205. Leaving the Sahara behind we head out of Mauritania towards Senegal. The border at Rosso is VERY corrupt so we took the track on the right at the outskirts of Rosso, and headed for the Diama dam, and the somewhat easier border post there. Intended to improve agriculture, this 100km barrage constrains the floodplain of the Senegal river, & forms a bird & wildlife sanctuary. At the pumping station, you drive onto the dam. I think Mohammed should've taken us to the lower track, as our car was low with all the gear we had on board. However, in spite of our comments here, Mohammed was a great guy, and we'd use him again without hesitation. Just ask for "The Mauritanian" at Dakhla camp. The unsurfaced Diama road has become VERY corrugated in places, over 20mph and the car shakes to bits. Some folks go really quick which can give a smooth ride, but there are BIG gulleys and wash-outs which are hard to see in the dust haze, & you WILL write off the car if you go into one! Some places it's best to drive on the top of the embankment. This was NOT the worst road of the trip. That was the one to Barra ferry, which was tarmac but so potholed in places, you had to give up & drive in the bush. Good video of washboarding at 5:17 here www.youtube.com Also little clip of a typical pothole: www.youtube.com
